TOPIC: THE LAMB IS WORTHY.*

Devotional Reading: Psalm 118:15-29.

Background Scripture:Revelation 5.

Lesson Scripture:: Revelation 5:1-10.

GOLDEN TEXT: And they sing a new song saying; "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slain, and with Your blood You purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation." *Revelation 5:9

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:

● Explain the significance of John's revelation. 

● Identify what makes the Lamb worthy to open the scroll. 

● Express their appreciation to the Lord who, through His death, redeemed them. 

INTRODUCTION

Animal imagery plays a very significant role in the Bible. Animals are often used as symbols of spiritual truths. A lamb signifies meekness, innocence and yielded- ness. These qualities are what Jesus Christ embodied when He gave Himself up to die on the cross. Isaiah prophesied that "he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth." (Isaiah 53:7; Acts 8:32), and at His baptism, John exclaimed, "Behold the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). The imagery of Jesus as the Passover Lamb was foreshadowed in the Old Testament (Exodus 12:13) where the blood of the Passover lamb saved the Israelites from destruction. In the work of atonement, Jesus is both the Lion and the Lamb. As the Lamb, "he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death- even death on a cross!" (Phil. 2:8). As the Lion, He is the One who has majestic, fearless power over all creatures, and He rules and reigns over them.

Christ is both the Lion and the Lamb because He has all the qualities of the two animals. In the setting of today's text, these two imageries are needed for Him, who is declared worthy to open the scroll. After He has submitted Himself to death, He was highly exalted in power and majesty (Philippians 2:9- 11), and He is the only one qualified to open the scroll.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. WHO IS WORTHY?*   

[Revelation 5:1-5] 

John saw the image of a scroll that was sealed on both sides. Then an angel cried out in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?" But to the amazement of John, no one could, both in heaven and on earth. John perhaps had an inkling about the value of what was written inside the scroll; he wept because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or break its seals. If the scroll could not be opened, then what it contained would not be revealed. John was still in this hopeless mood when one of the elders said to him, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals." The Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:9) and the Root of David (Isaiah 11:1, 10) both refer to Jesus. As a Lion, He has majesty, power and has triumphed over the enemy. As a Root, He is the Source of every creature, both in heaven and on earth. His sacrifice on the cross made Him triumph over Satan and gives Him the authority to open the scroll and break its seals.

It is a great privilege to have Jesus. He deserves all appreciation for His redemptive work. He alone is the solution to the problem of humanity. We must hold on to Him.

B.THE LAMB IS WORTHY* 

[Revelation 5:6-10] 

John saw a lamb looking as if it had been slain, standing at the centre of the throne and surrounded by the four living creatures and the elders. The lamb was a figure associated with the Passover lamb in Exodus, when God delivered the people of Israel from the firstborn plague in Egypt (Exodus 12:12-13). A slain lamb that was standing is a symbol signifying that Jesus died, yet He is still alive. The sacrifice He paid on the cross still remains fresh as the day it happened. Jesus Christ is the Lamb that had been slain. He alone can open the scroll and break the seal because He laid down His life for us all. He took the scroll from the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. After He had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before Him (the Lamb) and worshipped. He possesses the perfect power (seven horns), perfect wisdom (seven eyes), and perfect presence (seven Spirits in all the earth). He is the centre of all that transpires in heaven. The elders and the four living creatures surrounded the Lamb. The creatures and the elders, the saints in triumph, praised the Lamb together because He was worthy to break the scroll and read it.

Each of them had a harp and was carrying golden bowls of incense which is the form that the prayer of saints takes in heaven. They fell before the Lamb and continued to praise Him. They sang a song of worship to Him alone, who is worthy of praise. Christ gave His life to save all people of every tribe and tongue. Their song speaks about who we are in Christ. We are a kingdom and priests commissioned to serve God. And we are to reign on earth, declaring Christ's rule wherever we are.

1. Discuss the importance of singing worship songs to the Lamb that is worthy. 

2. Explain the significance of Christians as a kingdom and priests.

Call on members randomly to share testimonies of how they have been ministered to through songs.

● Pray for lost souls to come to the knowledge of the truth. 

● Pray for bumper harvests of souls in our local and international mission fields. 

● Pray for divine revelations for music ministry and ministers in your church.
