SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR YOUR PREPARATION

TOPIC: THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.*

*Devotional Reading: Psalm 40:9-17.

Background Scripture: Leviticus 16.

Lesson Scripture: Leviticus 16:11-19.

GOLDEN TEXT : In this way he will make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the uncleanness and rebellion of the Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is to do the same for the tent of meeting, which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness." *Leviticus 16:16.

*Objectives:* 

_*By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:*_

  Explain hindrances to acceptable worship;

● Mention two ways they would build a deeper relationship with God; 

● Ask God for the forgiveness of their sins.

INTRODUCTION* 

Sometime ago, the story of a woman trended on the social media. She escaped death by the whiskers when four I gunmen who were part of the Al-Qaeda affiliate of al Shabab attacked her inside a mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The tragic incident led to the death of 67 people, with over 200 people injured. The phone of a man who had been shot beside her was ringing in his pocket, and when she attempted to assist the man, she discovered he was in the pool of his blood. The woman decided to rub herself with the blood of the victim, believing that the terrorists would assume she was dead. The gunmen truly thought she was dead. Her dreadful disguise probably saved her life. She escaped death because she was covered by the blood of someone else who was a victim of that circumstance. In the Old Testament times, animals were killed, and their blood was used to atone for the sins of the priests and the nation of Israel.

*THE LESSON EXPLAINED

*A. AN OFFERING FOR THE PRIEST*

[Leviticus 16:11-14] 

God gave instructions to His people on how to offer sacrifices to Him, but Aaron's two sons, Nadab and Abihu, died because they did not follow these instructions. As a result of this, God instructed Aaron to offer a bull as atonement for the sins of his household and himself, so that he may not die. He was to go to the presence of God, in the Holy Place, with a young bull for his sin offering. He was to take with him burning coals from the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense so that the smoke of the incense would cover the mercy seat. Some of the bull's blood was to be sprinkled with his finger on the mercy seat. The blood was to be sprinkled seven times. The sons of Aaron died because they sinned against God; therefore, to prevent such from occurring again, Aaron was instructed to enter the Tabernacle three times; the first time, with a censer full of burning coals to burn incense, so that the smoke would cover the mercy seat and prevent him from seeing the Holy of Holiness. Aaron was instructed to enter the Tabernacle the second time to sprinkle the blood of the bull for the atonement of his sin. And the third time to sprinkle the blood seven times.

Believers must make their ways right with God. No sacrifice is enough to atone for the sins of humankind, like the blood of Jesus Christ. There is no need again to sacrifice any lamb or bull to appease God, the sacrifice of Jesus is enough to atone for the sins of the whole world. Stop trying to impress effort. Run to Jesus today for His cleansing power.

*DISCUSSION TIME:*

1. Discuss the lessons that can be learnt in verse 11 and how they can be applied in our contemporary time. 

2. Discuss how one can offer prayer for oneself and one's household.

*B. AN OFFERING FOR THE PEOPLE* 

[Leviticus 16:15-19] 

When Aaron finished atoning for himself and his household, God gave further instructions about the atonement for the sins of the nation at large. He was to kill a goat for the sin offering and do with the blood of the goat what he had done with the bull's blood, by sprinkling it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. Aaron was to ask for forgiveness of sins for the transgressions of the people of Israel. No man must be inside the tabernade of the assembly until he comes out and has completed all the rites of atonement for his, his household, and the whole nation's sins. The people and their worship place needed to be atoned for because of their sins. Oursins affect not only our households but also our worship places.

The place of worship cannot be holy when the worshippers are unholy. Articles of worship cannot be holy when the worshippers are not holy. We must not be careless about the quality of our offerings. God requires total holiness from worship leaders, the place of worship, articles of worship and the sanctification of the entire community. Thus, we must intercede for our families, friends, unbelievers and the nation at large. God desires that all nations be saved through His ultimate sacrifice.

*DISCUSSION TIME:*

1. Discuss the responsibility of believers in interceding for unbelievers around them and the nation at large. 

2. Discuss the significance of pastors interceding on behalf of the church.

*Fellowship and Ministry Building Activity:*

Lead class members to discuss the danger of wrong attitude towards giving an acceptable offering to God.

● Pray that the redemptive work of Christ will not be in vain over lost souls. 

● Pray that the atoning blood of Christ will wash away your sins.
