MEMORISE
READ:
Proverbs 6: 20-35
[20]. My son, keep your father’s command, and do not forsake the law of your mother.
[21]. Bind them continually upon your heart; tie them around your neck.
[22]. When you roam, they will lead you; when you sleep, they will keep you; and when you awake, they will speak with you.
[23]. For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
[24]. To keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a seductress.
[25]. Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
[26]. For by means of a harlot, a man is reduced to a crust of bread; and an adulteress will prey upon his precious life.
[27]. Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
[28]. Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be seared?
[29]. So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; whoever touches her shall not be innocent.
[30]. People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
[31]. Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; He may have to give up all the substance of his house.
[32]. Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul.
[33]. Wounds and dishonor he will get, and his reproach will not be wiped away.
[34]. For jealousy is a husband’s fury; therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
[35]. He will accept no recompense, nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.
EXPOSITION
Adultery is the act of engaging in sexual relations with someone other than one's spouse. It is divinely proscribed (Exo. 20:14). Married people are often the culprits in such cases. Those who are unmarried but engage in sexual relations with either married or unmarried persons are guilty of fornication. Sexual sins were strongly condemned in the Corinthian Church: church member involved in an incest with his father's wife (1 Cor. 5:1-6); church leaders engaging in sexual sin with their members (5:9-12; 7:1-2). What a sacrilege! Our text shows some severe consequences: degrading and being consumed (Prov. 6:26-29); the sexually immoral is seen as a thief (vv. 30-31) and a fool (v. 32a); destruction and dishonour (vv. 32b,33a); reproach and death (vv. 33b-35); high risk of contracting STDs. If you don't want to risk your life, then focus on what you have and avoid covetousness (Prov. 5:15; Matt 5:28; 1 Tim. 6:6-8; Heb. 13:4). Appreciate your partner; resist lust.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB: 188
1. Sinners, turn, why will ye die?
God, your Maker, asks you why:
God, who did your being give
Made you with Himself to live,
He the fatal cause demands,
Asks the work of His own hands;
Why, ye thankless creatures, why
Will you cross His love, and die?
2. Sinners, turn, why will ye die?
God, your Saviour, asks you why
God, who did your souls retrieve,
Died Himself, that you might live;
Will you let Him die in vain?
Crucify your Lord again?
Why ye ransom'd sinners, why
Will you slight His grace, and die?
3. Sinners, turn; why will ye die?
God, the Spirit, asks you why
He who all your lives hath strove,
Wooed you to embrace His love
Will you not His grace receive?
Will you still refuse to live?
Why, ye long-sought sinners, why
Will you grieve your God, and die?
4. Can you doubt if God is love,
If to all His yearnings move?
Will you not His word receive
Will you not His oath believe?
See, your dying Lord appears!
Jesus weeps believe His tears!
Mingled with His blood they cry
"Why will you resolve to die?"
Amen.
