DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE

TOPIC: THE WILDERNESS ROAD

READ: Exodus 13:17-22

[17]. Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.”

[18]. So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.

[19]. And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had placed the children of Israel under solemn oath, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”

[20]. So they took their journey from Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness.

[21]. And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.

[22]. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.

MEMORISE

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

EXPOSITION

In achieving our goals in life, there are various paths, but not all are suitable. If we are not guided by God, we may miss it at the point of our decision-making, which could be irreversible. This is why it is crucial to commit our ways to Him (Psa. 37:5), as He knows the end from the beginning (cf. Prov. 14:12). In the Exodus, God did not lead them through the shortest route. He was preventing them from returning to Egypt. During their journey, they were confused about the long journey, and challenged Moses' leadership. They believed that it would have been better to serve the Egyptians than die in the wilderness (Exo. 14:12), all because of their temporary precarious condition (cf. Rom. 8:18).

Despite the Jews' wilderness experiences, the Message Bible renders our Memory Scripture in part: I know what I'm doing (Jer. 29:11a). God knows what He is doing, taking us through wilderness experiences. Be patient with Him; don't take shortcuts, as they cut lives short.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, help me endure and learn from my wilderness experiences.

2. Father, help me to trust Your guidance and the leaders You appoint for me.

3. Pray that God should make our youths see reasons not to cut corners through illegality and the likes.
