THE LIVING WATER (January-December 2025)
DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE
TOPIC: THE CENTRE MUST HOLD
MEMORISE
And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them (Acts 15:4).
READ: Acts 15:1-4
[1]. And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”
[2]. Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question.
[3]. So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren.
[4]. And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them.
EXPOSITION
Today's Church often lacks the unity seen in the early Church. Many local churches seek to distance themselves from the central authority, or headquarters, despite their initial affiliation. This disunity is unapostolic and invites divine consequences (Rom. 13:1ff). The apostles, our spiritual predecessors, commenced their ministry from Jerusalem, following Christ's directive (Acts 1:8). Paul, mentored by Barnabas, always acknowledged and returned to Jerusalem, the headquarters (cf. Acts 15:4). The biblical model shows the importance of unity under a central leadership to today's churches. Lone ranger mentalities hinder growth and effectiveness. Just as snakes suffer without teamwork, churches falter when detached from their headquarters. Cooperation and loyalty to the central authority are essential for spiritual prosperity. Let us emulate the early Church's unity to ensure cohesion and effectiveness in fulfilling our mission.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY
CAC GHB: 81
1. Head of the church triumphant,
We joyfully adore Thee;
Till Thou appear, Thy members here
Shall sing like those in glory;
We lift our hearts and voices,
With bless'd anticipation,
And cry aloud, and give to God
The praise of our salvation.
2. While in affliction's furnace,
And passing through the fire,
Thy love we praise in grateful lays,
Which ever brings us nigher:
We clap our hands, exulting
In Thine almighty favour:
The love divine, that made us Thine,
Shall keep us Thine for ever
3. Thou dost conduct Thy people
Through torrents of temptation:
Nor will we fear, while Thou art near,
The fire of tribulation;
The world, with sin and Satan,
In vain our march opposes,
By Thee we shall break through them all,
And sing the song of Moses.
4. By faith we see the glory
To which Thou shalt restore us,
The world despise, for that high prize
Which Thou hast set before us;
And, if Thou count us worthy,
We each, with dying Stephen.
Shall see Thee stand at God's
Right hands,
To call us up to heaven.
Amen.
