*GOLDEN TEXT: "Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!" *Luke 18:39.*_

*Objectives:

_*By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:*_

● Explain the importance of persistence in prayer, as demonstrated by the blind man in the passage;

● Discuss why Jesus had mercy on the man who approached Him for a miracle; 

● Express the willingness to always present their requests to God in prayer.

*INTRODUCTION* 

While Jesus was on earth, He was involved in a threefold ministry: teaching, preaching and healing. He performed many miracles healed the sick, changed the natural elements of nature and even raised people from the dead. Some of the reasons Jesus performed miracles was to exhibit the love and mercy of God toward humankind, to affirm His true identify as the Son of God, and as signs of Old Testament prophecies about the coming of the long-awaited Messiah.

Today's text focuses on the faith of the blind man who recognised Jesus' power and ability to heal him. He asked the Son of David (Jesus) for mercy, and was persistent in his request, despite the fact that the people around him rebuked him sternly. The climax of the story is that the blind man was healed and he praised God. This motivated all those who saw the miracle to praise God along with him. This shows that the power of faith cannot be undermined in receiving mercy from God. It is a necessary requirement for anyone to experience divine healing.

*THE LESSON EXPLAINED*

*A. A CRY FOR MERCY*

[Luke 18:35-38]

As Jesus and His disciples approached Jericho, they saw a blind man sitting by the roadside begging for alms. According to verse 36, the man's curiosity was aroused probably by the noise of the crowd that followed Jesus, and he asked what was happening. The people's response was straight to the point. They said, 'Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.' The blind man, who possibly have heard about Jesus' power to heal, seized the opportunity to ask Him for mercy. Without wasting time, he called out saying: "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (v. 38) "Son of David" is a title that indicates the royal origin of the promised Messiah.

The action of the blind beggar in the passage is worth emulating. Although he was physically blind, he paid attention to what was happening in his surroundings and he was sensitive to the point that he became aware of Jesus' presence and His followers. The blind man recognised and proclaimed that Jesus is the Son of David; by implication, he knew who Jesus was and He addressed Him appropriately. It is obvious from the man's statement in verse 38 that he was truly desirous of mercy (healing). This is a lesson to believers to have faith and never give up in the face of challenges. We should not allow the enormity of the situation to weigh us down such that we lose faith. We should use every opportunity we have to present our request to God like the blind beggar did, no matter the obstacles we face.

*DISCUSSION TIME:*

1. How can believers get God's attention in challenging times? 

2. How does this saying, "Desperate times require desperate measures" apply to believers crying to God for mercy in troubled times?

B.THE BLIND MAN RECEIVES HIS SIGHT*

[Luke 18:39-43]

The persistent cry of the blind man truly reflected his desire to receive his sight. Unfortunately, those who followed Jesus wanted to deny him the opportunity. They rebuked and asked him to be quiet. They felt he should not bother Jesus with his problem. However, the man kept saying, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!' His persistence attracted the attention of Jesus, despite the people's attempt to shut him up, Jesus stopped and asked that the man be brought to Him. The dialogue between Jesus and the blind man in verses 41 and 42 is remarkable. Jesus said, "What do you want me to do for you? 'Lord, I want to see,' he replied. Then Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed you." According to verse 43, the man received his sight instantly as a result of his faith in Jesus. Immediately, he followed Jesus, praising God. The climax of the experience is that when the people saw the miracle, they also praised God.

The healing of the blind man in today's passage is one of the outstanding miracles of Jesus in the Gospel. It also stresses the need for Christians to have absolute faith in God and be persistent in the place of prayer. The blind beggar demonstrated great faith as he repeatedly called on the name of Jesus. While the crowd rebuked him, he shouted the more until Jesus commanded that he be brought to Him and eventually, he got his miracle. The miracle was so incredible that the people who witnessed it all praised God (v. 43b). Only Jesus would have been able to restore his sight because of His power to work miracles. Worthy of note is the man's readiness to follow Jesus in appreciation of the miracle he received. Christians should endeavour to persist in place of prayer, show gratitude to God for divine favour and be more committed to Him through faithful service.
