TOPIC: THE LAWS OF MARRIAGE (I)
MEMORISE
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Genesis 2:24).
READ; Genesis 2:20-25
[20]. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
[22]. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
[23]. And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
[24]. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
[25]. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
EXPOSITION
Marriage, like any institution, operates under a set of governing laws, whether written or unwritten, to maintain order and achieve its purposes. These laws are not meant to restrict but to provide guidance and direction. The first law of marriage ACCEPTANCE, as seen when Adam accepted Eve as his partner (Gen 2: 22-23). This acceptance is an outgrowth of love and forms the basis for unity, where couples see one another as one (v. 24). This law fosters family compatibility and a shared purpose. The second law of marriage is SELFLESSNESS, demonstrated by Adam and Eve's openness with each other (v. 25). They shared their thoughts and feelings, and supported each other. A selfless and open approach, where couples share their lives without shame or secrets, should be central in the Christian home
The third law of marriage is AGREEMENT. It is essential for any relationship, especially marriage. This law encourages couples to agree on living together, planning together, growing together, and uniting. Amos 3:3 queries, _Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?_ The law of agreement promotes common interests and uses differences as strengths to build strong homes. It involves intimate discussions decision-making, and shared goals, focusing on inner values, honesty, integrity, and cooperation. Happy Christian marriages result from couples consciously embracing these laws that positively govern marriage. By accepting, being selfless, and finding agreement, couples can create a strong foundation for a fulfilling and harmonious relationship.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, strengthen the bond of unity between me and my spouse.
2. Lord, let the spirit of selflessness lead in our homes.
3. Pray for couples who are in conflict, that the peace of God will take over their homes.
SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY: CAC GHB: 510
7 6 7 6
1. The voice that breathed o'er Eden
That earliest wedding-day,
The primal marriage blessing,
It hath not passed away.
2. Still in the pure espousal
Of Christian man and maid
The Holy Three are with us,
The threefold grace is said.
3. For dower of blessed children,
For love and faith's sweet sake,
For high mysterious union
Which nought on earth may break.
4. Be present, heav'nly Father,
To give away this bride,
As Eve Thou gav'st to Adam
Out of his own pierced side.
5. Be present, gracious Saviour,
To join their loving hands,
As Thou didst bind two natures
In Thine eternal bands.
6. Be present, Holy Spirit,
To bless them as they kneel,
As Thou for Christ the Bridegroom
The heav'nly spouse dost seal.
7. O spread Thy pure wings o'er them!
Let no ill pow'r find place,
When onward through life's journey
The hallow'd path they trace.
8. To cast their crowns before Thee,
In perfect sacrifice,
Till to the home of gladness
With Christ's own bride they rise.
Amen.
